About this item
A substantial and completely untouched attributable Royal Artillery Officers Sword By S.J. Pillin.
Septimus John Pillin was a sword cutler with premises at 31 Gerrard Street, Soho, London between 1881 and 1922. This Victorian example is likely to date between 1881 and 1892.
The sword has the 1821 pattern three bar hilt, stepped pommel and smooth backpiece with chequered thumb rest. The grip of shagreen grip bound in twistwire which is complete and in good overall condition, with service wear and some discolouration.
The 34.5 inch single fullered 1845 pattern blade in generally good clean condition. It bears Pillin's details to once ricasso, with thier "P" proof slug surmounted by interlocking triangles to the other. It has a serial number to the spine.
The blade also bears the interlocking initials of the original owner, which opens up a possible avenue for research. Possibly "D.W.C.L." or a combination thereof. The blade is further decorated with floral etching, the royal arms, VR cypher surmounted by thistles, and the regimental motto "Ubique", a field gun, feathered lightning bolts, and "Royal Artillery". The blade is bright overall but does have light pitting and staining, which is more noticeable towards the blades point and areas of the spine. The blade has also developed a slight bend, as is common with service carried swords of this period. Part of its history, but which could be corrected if desired. The spine also carries the "Centre of Percussion" marking.
The grip and hilt solid with no movement. Good untouched condition, and the whole could be cleaned and polished if desired.
Housed in its original Sam Brown Field Service scabbard, with steel mouthpiece and elongated steel drag. Some scuffing to the leather, but a pleasing and solid scabbard which may indicate Indian service.
