About this item
A rather sleepy Victorian 1854 pattern infantry officers sword, with 1845 pattern blade.
The makers marking is partially rubbed, but it looks to be "C. Webb, 23 Old Bond Street, London"
The guard is slightly mishappen, and has had the inner guard profesionally removed to reduce fraying on the uniform. The grip in good condition, with minimal wear to the shagreen which is bound with twistwire. Slight movement between blade and hilt, which would be rectified with the addition of a buff leather washer.
The 32.5 inch blade has been service sharpened, exhibiting the usual VR and floral etching. Scattered staining and light pitting which would improve with a gentle polish. Slight rounding of the blades point. Dull grey colour overall.
Housed in its brass scabbard with twin hanging rings, denoting that it belonged to an officer of field rank.
A good entry level sword with character, which has seen active service, and which will greatly improve with some TLC.
