A good 1821 pattern light cavalry presentation sword to the West York Yeomanry Cavalry.
The three bar hilt of standard form, with stepped pommel and shagreen grip bound with silver twistwire.
34.75 inch single fullered blade, maker marked "Reeves Maker Toledo Works Birmingham". The blade etched with crowned VR cypher, a stand of agricultural tool, a stand of arms, floral swags and foliage.
The Presentation panel reads "Presented to Private Luke Staniforth by Lieut Colonel Earl Fitzwilliam and the officers of the 1st WYYC as being the best swordsman in Capt Athorpes (K) or Kiveton Troop, 24th April 1862."
William Thomas Spencer Wentworth-FitzWilliam, 6th Earl FitzWilliam (12 October 1815 – 20 February 1902) held command of the 1st West Yorkshire Yeomanry Cavalry for 40 years, from 1846–1886, and was a Yeomanry Aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria's Viceroy in India, 1884–1894.
The sword housed in a regulation steel scabbard with twin handing rings.
A good untouched sword with a plum coloured patina to scabbard and hilt. The blade with light staining and, somewhat unusually, a small nick in the back edge.
