About this item
A very fine 1854 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword, by Wilkinson Sword, London. The blade bearing an etched panel "J.W. Preston, 28th Foot.
John William Preston, joined the 76th Foot as an Ensign in 1844. He was promoted Captain by Purchase, 1857, transferring into the 28th Foot, becoming Major in 1866 by transferring into the 60th Foot, before retiring in 1869. He came out of retirement to become Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st VB Lincolnshire Regiment, being subsequently promoted honoary Colonel in May 1886.
The sword itself dates to 1859, and is in fine untouched condition. It bears an etched panel which reads "Captain J.W. Preston, 28th Regiment" and has been lightly service sharpened. The blade also carries the usual crowned VR cypher, and floral engraving. Wilkinson makers details to the ricasso.
Blade length 32.5 inches, 1.25 inches wide at the ricasso.
The scabbard, whilst constructed to look like a standard brass mounted leather scabbard, is infact brass mounted steel. An unusual custom feature available from WIlkinson, which shows Preston was a career soldier, and obviously knew how flimsy the standard scabbard was.
Worthy of further research, I suspect there may be a reason he needed to purchase a second service sword.
Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
