    About this item

An original pair of 1942 dated Civil Defence Battledress Trousers ARP 58 in good condition.

This pattern of trousers was introduced in July 1941 and used by various arms of the Civil Defence including ARP Wardens. Made from a very dark blue serge wool like their Army counterparts, they feature a map pocket to the left leg; a first field dressing pocket to the upper right leg, belt loops to the waist, slash pockets to each hip and a flapped rear pocket. Many of the original 'blued' steel buttons (a process used on metalwork during this period which was designed to prevent the metal from corroding) are still present although a number of fly buttons have been replaced with period brass examples.

To the rear of the trousers the original label is still present and bears the title 'Trousers A.R.P. 58' and the size of 17. The manufacturer's name of 'D. Fieldman & Co Ltd' is present as is the 1942. The white cotton interior waistband features the War Department acceptance stamp which is surmounted by the letter 'O' which confirms the year of issue as 1942.

The trousers are a generous size and which will suit someone of around a 34" waist and when laid flat measure -

    Waist - 17 1/4"
    Inside leg - 30"

The trousers are in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. They show some signs of wear and use but overall display very well. There are some small repairs around the crotch which have been well done. Due to the dark colour of the wool serge material, they are only noticable on close inspection and should not be visible when worn.

A rare pair of wartime trousers which still retain their original label. These would make a fine addition to any Home Front collection.
