About this item
A rare large size economy pattern British Army Service Dress Tunic dated 1942.
Often referred to as '1922 Pattern' by collectors, this particular tunic is the wartime austerity pattern which features plain patch pockets on the chest rather than the pre and post war patterns which have pleats. Aside from this detail the tunic is more-or-less unchanged from the earlier pattern.
The tunic is made from the standard khaki green coloured serge wool and features a full set of brass Kings crown brass buttons and brass belt hangers in the waist. The jacket is fitted with brass Royal Artillery collar badges and shoulder titles as well as a white lanyard to the left shoulder.
Inside the tunic still retains its original label which is still bright and legible. It states the size as No.15 NS which is a hard to find broader size which is designed to fit a 42-43" chest. It also bears the maker's name 'Polikoff Ltd' as well as the War Department broad arrow marking and the April 1942 date. Adjacent to the label is the War Department broad arrow marking which is surmounted by the letter 'O' which denotes 1942 as the year of issue.
When laid flat the tunic measures -
Chest - 22"
Inside arm - 19 1/2"
Outside arm - 26"
Shoulders - 17 1/2"
Length - 30 1/2"
The tunic is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures and it displays very well. It is very clean overall and there are only limited signs of wear or use and is still totally wearable. There are some small holes to the sleeves where badges have previously been fitted as illustrated in picture 6. It is a vintage, pre-owned item however so please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.
All in all a very nice tunic which would suit both the collector as well as the re-enactor due to its larger size.
