    About this item

An original 1941 Pattern Auxiliary Territorial Service tunic dated 1943 which is a size No. 5.

This tunic belonged to a woman who served in the ATS as part of the HQ Lines of Communications troops 21st Army Group. This unit was formed in 1943 and went to France in June 1944. It took part in the entire campaign throughout North West Europe and ended the war in Germany where it was re-named British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) in August 1945.

Officially designated  'Jacket, Serge, A.T.S 1941 Pattern' but sometimes referred to as the Second Pattern Tunic or Economy Tunic. The tunic features a 4 button front and plain patch pockets to the chest whilst the skirt features flapped pockets. Epaulettes are located to the shoulders and are fitted with brass ATS shoulder titles and an ATS lanyard is fitted through the right hand epaulette. Sergeant stripes are fitted to each sleeve above which are HQ Lines of Communications troops 21st Army Group formation badges. There is also a France and Germany medal ribbon fitted to the left breast which denotes that the original owner served in Europe at some point in 1944-45. The tunic comes complete with its original matching waist belt which has a brass two pronged buckle.

Inside the tunic the tunic features a full lining as well as a First Field Dress pocket and a hanging loop to the neck. The original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the size of 5 which is designed to fit a 33" - 34" bust and a 25" - 26" waist. The maker's name of 'Raper & Bainbridge Ltd'  is present as is the War Department broad arrow. There is also an issue date stamp which reads 'Nov 1943'. This date is confirmed by the War Department acceptance stamp also found inside the jacket which is surmounted by the letter 'N'.

When laid flat the tunic measures -

    Chest - 17"
    Waist - 13"
    Inside arm - 16 3/4"
    Outside arm - 22 1/2"
    Shoulders - 13 1/2"
    Length at back - 25 1/2"

The overall condition of the tunic is very good and it displays well with no serious flaws or issues. There are a couple of small areas of damage to the rear which are illustrated in the last two pictures although these are only noticeable under close scrutiny. Please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original wartime dated example which displays well and has some nice period badges.
