    About this item

An original Women's Land Army Macintosh Raincoat in a size small.

Officially designated 'Macintosh W. L. A', this raincoat is typical of the period. It is made from a khaki tan coloured rubberised canvas as was used for a lot of wet weather clothing for the British military during this period. It features a double breasted front, waist belt with leather buckle and twin slash pockets to the front. The coat features no lining and has brown painted metal vents under each arm.

Inside the coat there is evidence of where the original label was previously attached. As well as this there are black ink stamps to the neck including the size of small and the War Department broad arrow marking. There is also a War Department acceptance stamp which is surmounted by the letter 'R' which denotes the year of issue as 1948.

When laid flat the coat measures -

    Chest - 19 1/2"
    Inside arm - 15 1/2"
    Outside arm - 20 1/2"
    Shoulders - 15 1/2"
    Length - 41"

The coat displays well and is complete but is not the best example. The rubberised material has broken down throughout most of the garment meaning it has lost its stiffness and possibly some waterproofing qualities. It could be worn although it is sold as a display item. The condition has been reflected in the price.

A hard to find piece from this period which would still make a nice addition to a collection even though it is not in the best condition.
