    About this item

An original RAF Ordinary Airman's tunic complete with its original matching waist belt and insignia.

This tunic belonged to Donald Woodmouth Clarkson 1115089 who joined the RAF between september 1939 and February 1940. He served throughout the Second World War and saw service overseas in the Far East.

This pattern of tunic was introduced into service with the RAF in the 1930s and saw issue throughout the Second World War. Whilst not stated on the label, this is a 'simplified' example which was introduced in 1940, replacing the earlier pattern with French cuff.  The tunic is made from the standard RAF blue coloured wool serge and features a full set of Kings crown brass buttons which have tarnished down to a bronze colour with age. The tunic is fitted with original wartime semi-embroidered eagle badges to the top of each sleeve below which are original corporal stripes.

Inside the tunic the original label is still present although it has been washed out. This is undoubtedly a wartime example however as the owner was demobbed at the end of the war. When laid flat the tunic measures -

    Chest - 19"
    Wait - 15"
    Inside arm - 18 1/2"
    Outside arm - 25"
    Length - 27 1/2"
    Shoulders - 16 3/4"

The condition of the tunic is good as can be seen in the pictures. It shows signs of use, wear and washing but overall displays well. There are a couple of small moth nips to the rear and some staining as detailed in the pictures. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.

The tunic comes complete with its original waist belt and brass buckle.

The last picture in the listing is of Donald and was taken before he was made a corporal. I believe this could be the same tunic as worn in the photo as the same pattern of eagle badges can be seen.

All in all a nice, early tunic in good condition complete with some history.
