    About this item

A very rare original Royal Navy austerity pattern Able Seaman's Greatcoat in good condition.

Officially designated 'Class II Ratings Overcoat' this pattern of coat was introduced in 1937 and stayed in service into the 1950s. It is made from a thick, black coloured serge wool and features a double breasted front which fastens with black plastic King's crown Royal Navy buttons. The rear of the coat features a half belt which is stitched in and is a notable feature of the austerity pattern coat and dates it to the Second World War. There are also metal belt hangers to the rear which are intended to support webbing if worn.

The interior of the coat is partially lined and features a large hanging loop at the neck and there is no throat latch stored inside which is another feature of the austerity pattern. The label is absent although it is easy to date the coat without one. The original owner has marked his name to the interior which reads 'F. R. Ramsden'. The sleeve lining is also another feature seen on coats from the first half of the 20th Century which was still being used during the Second World War but not in the post-war years. This is illustrated in picture 6.

The coat will suit around a 38" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest -  21 1/2"
    Inside arm - 18 1/2"
    Outside arm - 26 1/4"
    Shoulders - 17"
    Length - 44"

The coat is in good condition for its age and it displays well. It is still very wearable with no serious flaws and only limited signs of wear and use. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A good wartime example of this very hard to find pattern of greatcoat.
