    About this item

An original matching blues tunic and cap to a sergeant of the Sherwood Foresters which was made by 'Montague Burton' during the 1930s.

Officially designated 'Jacket, Serge, Blue, OR', this pattern of uniform was worn as a No.2 dress for dismounted regiments as a best dress for walking out and it would have been a common sight on a sunday during the 1930s. The jacket is made from a navy blue coloured wool serge which is of a higher quality than that used for Service Dress and Battledress. It is fitted with Notts and Derby Sherwood Foresters buttons throughout as well as collar badges and a bullion sergeant stripe to the right sleeve. The interior is fully lined and features a Montague Burton Oceanic Serge label which dates from the mid to late 1930s and is a fantastic addition to the tunic.

The tunic is a small size which will suit a 35" - 36" chest. When laid flat is measure -

    Chest - 19 1/2"
    Inside arm - 17 3/4"
    Outside arm - 24 1/2"
    Shoulders - 16 1/2"
    Length - 27 1/2"

The jacket is in good condition and displays well. There is some limited moth damage - namely to the bottom edge of the right hand lower pocket, a hole to the interior as shown in picture 8 and a small hole to the rear of the collar (picture 15). There are some signs of wear and age but overall it is a good example.

The cap is a very nice example of an inter-war blues peaked cap which is very hard to find today. It features a blue blue crown and black patent leather peak with green underside. The chin strap is the original article and is held in place with two small brass general service buttons. A Sherwood Foresters cap badge is fitted to the front which is an original and most likely original to the cap. The interior features a cotton lining and a leather sweatband.

The cap is in good condition with some signs of wear and age. There is some limited discolouration to the top side of the crown and some holes to the leather sweatband as illustrated in the last picture. Overall it displays well and is approximately a size 6 3/4.

A rare pre-war set which would make a great addition to any collection. Many units handed in their blues to be destroyed at the beginning of the Second World War and were turned into blankets and other articles to help the war effort. This makes original pre-war blues items even more rare to find today!
