About this item
A rare original RAF Leather Jerkin dating from 1939 and in good condition.
This pattern of leather jerkin came into issue with the British Army during the Great War and stayed in service throughout the Second World War and well into the post-war years. This particular example is the RAF pattern which features a rare early version of the lining which is fawn coloured and interestingly is made of jersey. The front of the tunic fastens with four corozo buttons which are again different to those usually encountered.
Inside the jerkin there is no label although there is a black ink stamp which features the Air Ministry crown and AM markings along with the 1939 contract number.
The tunic is designed to fit between a 37" and 43" chest and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 23"
Shoulders - 21"
Length - 30 1/2"
The condition of the jerkin is very good for its age with some limited signs of wear and use. Overall it displays very well and is totally wearable with some slight crazing and signs of age to the leather exterior. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have flaws commensurate with age.
RAF issue leather jerkins are very rare to find today, especially from this early period of the war. This would make an excellent addition to any RAF collection without a doubt and would be very suitable for a Battle for France or Battle of Britain collector.
