1944  German Leaflet Dropped on American Troops. St Lo, Normandy

Of particular interest as the 80th anniversary of D Day approaches these 215 mm x 145mm Leaflets were dropped by German planes on the nights of 21 and 22 June 1944 in France during "Operation Cobra" near St. Lo in Normandy.

The back of the leaflet reads: "That's the Cry of the 1st American Army near St. Lo. Who knows, perhaps YOU may be in the same desperate situation to-morrow"

The Leaflet is in fair to good condition, and I believe extremely rare. It has been once folded and has some tears and creases with small amounts missing.

The Battle of Saint-Lô was one of the three conflicts in the battle of the hedgerows, which took place between July 7 and 19, 1944, in Saint-Lô, Manche, Normandy, France, just before Operation Cobra. Saint-Lô had fallen to Germany in 1940, and, after the Invasion of Normandy, the Americans targeted the city, as it served as a strategic crossroads. American bombardments caused heavy damage (up to 95% of the city was destroyed) and a high number of casualties, which resulted in the martyr city being called "The Capital of Ruins", popularized in a report by Samuel Beckett.
