    About this item

POST-WW2 USAAF/USAF A-8B OXYGEN MASK. Rare example of this POST-WW2 configured A-8B oxygen mask, introduced circa 1941. These are often known as bladder masks due to the rebreather bag found on the mask. Used widely in the ETO by alot of USAAF forces before being superceded by the A-9, A-10 series of masks.

Firstly the mask body has hardened quite considerably. It is completely solid and without any flexibility. This is unfortunately due to age and the nature of the rubber. However this is common among these masks and we have seen several other original wartime masks that have gone the same way. Because of the hardness of the rubber the mask is somewhat difficult to display on a display head, and we'd advise to possibly display this flat laid down. Regardless there is no major damage to the rubber, with no losses. There is some light surface cracking to the rubber but this is again common to see on rubber of this age. The mask retains good shape still and we have had it on display with a helmet and goggles and it does look good! The mask complete with original harness, this is a two part elasticated straps that fix around the wearers head or neck. The green elastic is somewhat stretched now but not damaged otherwise. The harness attaches to the mask via two plastic pieces around the exhalation valve and a bakelite cup on the nose section. These are in well aged but good condition, no issues to report.

The mask is copiously marked on the two rubber exhalation valves. It is dated 2-43, manufactured by the OHIO CHEMICAL & MFG Co, "PROPERTY AIR FORCES US ARMY", marked ARCTIC which i believe relates to the temperature the mask will operate at. The exhalation valves have simple pieces of sponge inside them and in the left side there is a small hole. The mask fitted with what i believe is an original but post ww2 rebreather bag. It is in pretty good condition, with no major damage to the bag. there is a small area of damage to the where it attaches to the mask itself. Some minor cracks, splits etc which can be seen in the photos. Finally the oxygen hose is all original, a simple push fit on to the fitting on the mask. There is some cracks and crazing, but no major damage, holes, to report. Fitted with correct original oxygen fitting at the end.

Overall a good displayable example of these rare early USAAF/USAF oxygen masks. Ideal for any USAAF museum, display or collection.
