    About this item

An original 1944 dated British National Fire Service Battledress Blouse in a size 6.

This jacket started life as a standard NFS 29A Tunic but has been converted into a battledress jacket. Short blouson jackets were the fashion during the Second World War with the long tunics of the Great War and inter-war period being something which looked very dated. This is most likely why the original owner had the jacket tailored as it is clearly a period conversion. Another option is that it was converted in the immediate post-war period to be worn as civilian wear.

The jacket is made from the standard serge wool used for a wide variety of British uniform during the Second World War. It is dyed black as was regulation for fire service uniforms and it features a single breasted front which fastens with plastic NFS buttons. Plain patch pockets are located to the front and fasten with smaller plastic NFS buttons. The waistband has been made from the tunic belt and retains the stamped metal buckle which is a nice detail. The rear of the jacket features a patrol back which gives the jacket a nice silhouette.

Inside the jacket the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title of 'Jacket, Single Breasted, Patrol N.F.S. 29A' below which is the size of 6. The maker's name of 'B. Bloom Ltd' is also present as is the 1944 date and the War Department broad arrow marking.

The jacket will suit around a 36" chest and when laid flat the jacket measures -

    Chest - 20"
    Waist - 18" (Adjustable)
    Inside arm - 17"
    Outside arm - 23"
    Shoulders - 18 1/4"
    Length at rear - 22 1/2"

The jacket is in good condition for its age with no serious flaws or damage. There are some signs of wear and age which are to be expected from a vintage jacket which is 80 years old. Overall it is totally wearable but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original period converted blouson jacket!
