    About this item

An original 1952 Pattern British Army Officers Rubberized Macintosh Raincoat in nice condition.

The style of this raincoat is totally unchanged from those of the 1930s and 1940s and it could easily pass as one if it wasn't for the fact that it is clearly a 1952 pattern coat. The War Department approved this pattern of raincoat in the early 1950s and called it the 1952 pattern although it is essentially just a civilian 1930-40s raincoat. It also looks the same as those worn by British Officers during the Second World War.

The coat is made from a heavy rubberised cotton material chosen for its weatherproof qualities. It features a belt made from matching material and a leather covered buckle which is in good condition along with a fly fronted single breasted front. Brass eyelets are fitted underneath each armpit to allow for ventilation and flapped pockets are located to the front at the waist. The rear features a long single vent which fastens with two buttons which are missing, as is often the case. Inside each sleeve is a storm cuff which features an elasticated hem and a press stud fastening (picture 6).

Inside the coat there is a section of plaid check wool across the shoulders and back which constitutes as a half lining and features a typical period colourway. An inside pocket can be found below which is a small belt with metal painted eyelets which fits into a corresponding buckle on either side of the coat to keep it done up and in shape from the inside. The original label is present to the neck and bears the maker's name of 'Fidamac' in typical period graphics. The military issue label is also present to the skirt and bears the title of 'Macintoshes Officer's 1952 Pattern' below this is the size of 13 which is designed to fit around 5' 9" tall and a 39" - 40" chest. The maker's name of 'H. & L. Fidler Ltd' is present as is the War Department broad arrow marking and the 1953 date.

The coat is a small size which will fit around a 40" chest depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 24"
    Inside arm - 18"
    Outside arm - 25"
    Length - 46"
    Shoulders - 18"

The overall condition of the coat is good as can be seen in the photographs. There are marks and stains however as this is a vintage and pre-worn item, so please study the photographs. The material is soft and pliable throughout and has not hardened, as they often do. It still appears to be a very wearable item but please bear in mind that it has some signs of wear and age.

All in all, a nice original Macintosh raincoat in a medium size and complete with its original belt. This would be an ideal addition to a period suit or British Army Officers impression.
