About this item
A nicely Sectionised British WW1 Number 85 Mk1 fuse.
Designed to be used with the 15 and 18 pounder guns shells which were both shrapnel and fragmentation shells, the fuse being designed to detonate the shell in a timed air burst or on impact, the shell itself packed with steel balls held in resin.
A fascinating piece with still moving internal parts, it remains in very good condition and ideal for display or as a desk ornament.
Made by the US company Alco (American Locomotion Company) these were shipped by their thousands to the UK prior the US entry into WW1and were part of the illegal cargo on the Lusitania when she was sunk by a U-Boat on her way to the UK, the Commander then vilified for what was in fact a legitimate target.
