Kabuto (兜) – Samurai Helmet
The Kabuto is the helmet worn by samurai warriors, usually made from riveted metal plates and designed to protect the head in battle.
Bowl (Hachi): The main dome of the helmet, often constructed from multiple iron plates.
Shikoro: A series of articulated neck guards made from layered lacquered plates, hanging from the back and sides.
Maedate: A crest or ornament mounted at the front, often depicting clan symbols, animals, or mythical figures.
Some Kabuto had intricate designs and elaborate ornamentation, showing the status and personality of the wearer.
Often lacquered and decorated, both to protect from the elements and for aesthetics.
Menpō (面頬) – Face Mask
The Menpō is a facial armor mask, worn with the Kabuto to protect the face.
Types of facial armour:
Menpō: Covers the entire face or lower face.
Hanbō: Covers the lower half (jaw and cheeks).
Sōmen: Covers the full face.
Typically made of lacquered iron or leather, often with fierce or intimidating expressions to strike fear into opponents.
Usually has a detachable nose piece and features like a mustache or teeth, and may include a throat guard (Yodare-kake) hanging below.
Some Menpō were lined for comfort and had ventilation holes or padding.
Cultural & Historical Importance
The Kabuto and Menpō were not just practical — they were deeply symbolic.
The elaborate designs and decorations reflected:
Clan identity
Spiritual beliefs (e.g., invoking protection from gods)
Status and rank within the samurai class
They were used from the Heian period (794–1185) through the Edo period (1603–1868).
