About this item
WW2 RAF - Desert Air Force "Late Arrivals Club" Flying Boot badge. A very rare unofficial RAF club badge to find is this "Late Arrivals Club" flying boot badge. These were given out mainly in the North African Desert theatre and campaign. They were awarded to airmen who had been shot down, crashed, or bailed out and managed to get themselves back to friendly lines or back to base. They were known as "Late Arrivals", as they were arriving back at base later than expected, hence the name of the club.
These badges were made in North Africa, most likely in the back streets of Cairo. They were made from a bronze/copper-like metal and were crudely sand cast and silver plated. They were normally issued with a certificate as well, naming the successful late arriver.
This example is in pretty good condition; it has lost a large amount of its silver plating, but some remains, it has the remains of what looks like a twin pin back. We have seen several different variations for different attachments, pins, etc. It is approximately 2.5cm by 3cm tall, and was supposed to be worn on the left breast pocket by the wearer. It goes without saying this was an unofficial club, much like the caterpillar club or gold fish club, but with far less members.
Overall, a lovely, rare badge that displays very well. Ideal for any WW2 aviation collection, museum display, etc.
