About this item
WW1 German bayonet unmarked.
German S98/05 "Butcher" bayonet from World War I. This model is one of the most recognizable and common German bayonets of the period. Here's a breakdown of its features and what makes it notable:
Key Identifying Features:
Blade Shape: The most distinctive feature is the "butcher blade" profile. The blade widens near the tip and has a slight upward curve, resembling a butcher's cleaver. This was a direct result of its design, which was intended to be a robust, all-purpose tool in addition to a bayonet.
Sawback Blade (S98/05 a.A. S): The blade on your example has a prominent sawback along the spine. These saw-bladed versions were officially designated "S" (for Säge, German for saw) and were issued to specific units, primarily engineers, machine gun crews, and pioneers, for use as a tool to cut wood and clear obstacles.
Grip: The two-piece wooden grips with diagonally cut grooves are characteristic of the later "n.A." (neuer Art or "new type") version of the S98/05. Early versions had one-piece grips.
Flash Guard: The metal plate extending from the crossguard over the top of the grips is a "flash guard." This was a later wartime modification added from 1915 onwards to prevent the wooden grips from being damaged by the muzzle flash when the bayonet was fixed to the shorter Karabiner 98 rifle.
Scabbard: The black-painted metal scabbard is correct for the wartime period. Earlier scabbards were made of leather, but steel scabbards were introduced due to the harsh and damp conditions of trench warfare.
The "Unmarked" Aspect: It's common for WWI-era bayonets to have markings.
The fact that this bayonet is "unmarked" is not unheard of. During the later years of the war, as production ramped up and quality control became less of a priority, some manufacturers omitted markings to speed up the process. This can make a precise identification of the manufacturer or date difficult, but it doesn't detract from its authenticity as a WWI German bayonet.
The overall condition, with visible pitting and wear, suggests it is an authentic piece that saw service. The combination of the "butcher" blade, sawback, and flash guard makes it a classic example of Imperial German military equipment from the Great War.
