About this item
The 45th Foot (Nottinghamshire) A superb Officers Silver and Gilt Shoulder Belt Plate worn 1832-1850. With Georgian Crown and fourteen gilded rays with all the Peninsular War Battle Honours over a multi pointed hob nailed silver star, Numerals 45 to centre. Superb and very scarce.
This is a beautifully preserved example of a British Army officer's shoulder belt plate from the 45th Regiment of Foot (Nottinghamshire Regiment), dated approximately 1832–1850.
Key Features:
Regiment Number: "45" prominently displayed in the center.
Crown: A Georgian crown (distinctive from the later Victorian design), indicating pre-Queen Victoria era styling.
Battle Honours: The golden rays around the central star each bear Peninsular War battle honours, reflecting the regiment’s distinguished service during the Napoleonic Wars (1808–1814).
Materials:
Gilt (gold-plated) for the decorative elements.
Silver hobnail star background (giving a textured effect).
Motto Banner: Includes the regiment’s name, "NOTTINGHAMSHIRE" and likely a Latin or honorific motto referencing their campaign service.
Timeframe of Use: Circa 1832 to 1850, based on the design and monarchy indicators.
Historical Context:
The 45th Regiment of Foot, also known as the Nottinghamshire Regiment, served with great distinction in the Peninsular War, and earned numerous battle honours which are proudly displayed on items like this belt plate. These were not just decorative but also served to convey regimental pride and identity.
Rarity and Value:
This is a "superb and very scarce" — shoulder belt plates in such fine condition from this period are quite collectible and valued by military historians and collectors of British Napoleonic and early Victorian military memorabilia.
