About this item
The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders 3rd Volunteer Battalion (Renfrewshire) Victorian Officers Silver Shoulder Belt Plate. Formed in 1887 from the Renfrewshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, they became the 6th Battalion A&S Highlanders in 1908. The standard regimental pattern plate but all in silver. To the bottom a scroll “Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders” over a smaller scroll “3rd Volunteer Battn". Pristine condition. Price includes delivery within the UK. Additional charges apply for international shipping.
Victorian-era Officers' Silver Shoulder Belt Plate for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's), specifically the 3rd Volunteer Battalion (Renfrewshire).
The design is typical of the regiment's insignia, featuring:
A Crown (St Edward's or Imperial Crown) at the top.
A scroll beneath the crown reading "PRINCESS LOUISE'S".
Conjoined wreaths of myrtle (left) and butcher's broom (right), with a centre-piece depicting a Boar's Head (the Campbell crest, associated with the Argyll element) on the left and a Wildcat/Cat-a-mountain (the Sutherland crest) on the right.
The boar's head is above a small scroll with the Campbell motto: "A CONJUGIBUS" (which is a variant or part of Ne Obliviscaris - "Forget Not").
The cat is above a small scroll with the Sutherland motto: "DEAS PÉ DÉIST" (which is a Gaelic variant of Sans Peur - "Without Fear").
A large tripartite scroll at the bottom reading "ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS" (The words "ARGYLL &," "SUTHERLAND," and "HIGHLANDERS" are split into three parts).
A scroll below the main title, which often denoted the specific battalion. Based on the file name and the search results, this specific plate pattern would typically have a scroll for the "3rd VOLUNTEER BATTN" at the very bottom, confirming its identity with the Renfrewshire battalion (the search results confirm the 3rd VB was the Renfrewshire one). The bottom scroll in the picture appears to be partially obscured but reads "3RD VOUNTEER BATTN" or similar.
This particular style, featuring the Princess Louise's title and the combination of crests and scrolls, places it in the period after the amalgamation of the 91st and 93rd Regiments in 1881, and before the Volunteer Battalions were converted to Territorial Force in 1908. It is described in searches as the 1887-1908 pattern Officer's Shoulder Belt Plate.
