About this item
This is a highly identifiable and scarce piece of British military insignia: a Victorian Officer's Shoulder Belt Plate for the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot, better known as The Black Watch.
A plate worn by officers of the 42nd Foot before the 1881 Childers Reforms.
Key Features and Historical Context:
Regiment: 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch).
Period: Victorian, Pre-1881. This specific design was worn by officers of the 42nd Foot from about 1850 until the 1881 reforms, which amalgamated the 42nd and 73rd Regiments into a single regiment, "The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)," and generally changed the plates.
Item Type: Officer's Shoulder Belt Plate (worn on the cross-belt that supported the sword).
Construction: Described as a reeded gilt backplate with a silver overlay, which the image clearly shows as a fine, intricate bi-metal design.
Insignia Details:
Background: A square, gilt-coloured plate with a textured, reeded, or checkered pattern (known as seeded or hobnailed).
Star: A large, silver-coloured Star of the Order of the Thistle, featuring a saltire (St. Andrew's Cross) with faceted, hobnailed points.
Centre (Garter): A gilt oval bearing the motto of the Order of the Thistle, "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT" (No one provokes me with impunity), surrounded by an oval wreath of thistles.
Regimental Number: In the center, the prominent silver numerals "42" on a reeded gilt background, identifying the regiment by its numerical designation.
Crown: Surmounting the entire central design is a Victorian Crown (Queen's Crown).
Base: Below the motto, a lion (or part of the Sphinx, which often appeared on this pattern of plate, representing the Egypt campaign of 1801).
This is a museum-quality piece of insignia from one of the most famous regiments in the British Army.
