About this item

Highland Light Infantry Victorian Volunteer Battalion Officers Shoulder Belt Plate.

This belt plate dates to the Victorian Era (circa 1881–1901) and belonged to an officer in one of the Volunteer Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry (HLI).

The plate is constructed of several pieces of metal—a technique common for high-quality officer's insignia—using a mix of gilt (gold plating) and silver (or white metal) finishes:

Seeded Gilt Backplate: This is the rectangular foundation of the plate, covered in a textured, stippled gold finish that signifies an officer's quality accoutrement.

Star of the Order of the Thistle: This large, multi-pointed silver overlay represents Scotland’s highest chivalric order and is a central element of the HLI's badge design, confirming the regiment's Scottish identity.

Imperial Crown: The gilt crown surmounting the central design is the Victorian Crown (Queen's Crown), which definitively places the piece in the period before 1901.

Curled Bugle Horn: The silver bugle horn is the universal emblem of Light Infantry regiments, signifying the HLI's role as skirmishers and fast-moving troops.

"HLI" Monogram: The gilt, interlaced letters stand for Highland Light Infantry.

The Elephant and Scroll: The gilt Elephant is a prized battle honour awarded to the 74th Foot (one of the HLI's predecessor regiments) for their bravery at the Battle of Assaye in 1803.

The long blank gilt scroll beneath the bugle is the key distinguishing feature of a Volunteer Battalion plate. On the plates of the regular Line Battalions, this scroll would be inscribed "ASSAYE." The Volunteer units either left it blank or, in some cases, engraved their own battalion name or number.

With its magnificent silver-on-gilt construction and the blank scroll, is a particularly desirable and relatively scarce example of a Volunteer Officer's dress insignia.
