    About this item

A lovely original Battle of Britain period RAF b-type flying helmet in very good condition which dates from 1941.

The B-type flying helmet came into issue with the RAF prior to the Second World War and became synonymous with the Battle of Britain. This example was made in 1941 making it one of the last British made B Types to be produced.

This iconic flying helmet features two zipped ear pieces which house the receivers. Both these retain their original zips which both function well. Inside each ear piece are original sponge donuts which give the ear pieces their distinctive shape whilst protecting the receivers. Both ear pieces also bear the AM mark and stores reference code stamped directly onto the leather as illustrated in picture 10.

This helmet also features a leather chin strap which is fastened with a 'Bennetts' buckle. There is another strap at the rear which features the same style of buckle and a pair of brass pop studs which are designed to take the D-type oxygen mask are located to each cheek. The original brown paint is still visible in places and they will both function fine when used with a mask.

Inside the helmet the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the size of two below which is the Air Ministry AM and crown marking along with the RAF store code of 22C/65. The maker's name of 'Frank Bryan Ltd' is present as is the 1941 date. It also appears that the original owner has marked their name in ink which is hard to read as can be seen in picture 14.

The overall condition of the helmet is fantastic as can be seen in the pictures. The outer leather shell is in extremely good condition with a fantastic patina. There are signs of wear and use but all the stitching is strong and there are no serious flaws aside from some damage to the bottom of each side near the chin strap which is illustrated in picture 8 and 9. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

All in all, a lovely original B-type flying helmet in fantastic condition that displays beautifully. This would compliment any RAF collection without a doubt.
