    About this item

A rare original set of 'Overalls lightweight, 1951 Pattern' which date from the early 1950s.

This pattern of flying suit was introduced in the early 1950s for RAF aircrews. This example was issued to a pilot officer who was a navigator as is denoted by the original insignia which is still fitted to the suit.

These suits are typical of early jet-age RAF items in many ways. It is made from a grey coloured ventile cotton and features an integral waist belt which fastens with a large steel buckle as was used on numerous items during this period including the MK1 aircrew jacket and the 1951 pattern RAF parka. Patch pockets are located to the chest and fasten with rubber buttons. The left breast pocket has press studs fitted to it which would suggest the original owner wore a removable squadron crest. More rubber buttons fasten the front (two replaced) and there are tabs at the bottom of the leg which also employ the same buttons (one missing). There is an angle pent pocket to the left sleeve and two large pockets are fitted towards the bottom of each leg. Epaulettes are located to each shoulder and have been fitted with pilot officer insignia. A navigator brevet has been fitted to the left breast and is clearly original to the flight suit.

Inside the suit there is a hanging loop to the neck, below which is the original label. It bears RAF stores code of 22C/1141 as well as the size of 5 and the War Department broad arrow marking. The original owner has marked his name in ink which reads 'Ridgley'.

The suit is in good condition with no serious damage or flaws. There are plenty of signs of wear and use as well as some staining which are evident in the pictures. This example was clearly issued and saw extensive uses flying with the RAF. Please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A fantastic example of this rare to find pattern which is complete with its original insignia.
