    About this item

A rare original Royal Air Force MK4 Pressure Jerkin which was made in 1964.

This jerkin was used in Lightening and Canberra aircraft during the 1960s by aircrew using ejector seats. It is made from an RAF blue-grey coloured cotton canvas and features a zip up front which fastens with a double ended 'Flash' branded zipper, as are often found on RAF items from this period. There are large pockets fitted the body of the jacket for search and rescue apparatus (S.A.R.A.H.) and the pocket flaps feature ventile cotton to the inside which is again RAF blue-grey. A long horizontal zip is fitted across the centre of the rear panel which allows access to the adjustment laces which can be tightened or loosened to suit the wearer. The jacket features a separate bladder which is illustrated in the pictures opened out. There is a zip to the rear which allows access to the inflation bladder.

Inside the jerkin the original labels are still present and are bright and legible. The main label bears the title of 'Pressure Jerkin MK 4' along with the RAF stores reference number, contract number and serial number. The size is stated as 3 and the manufacture date of November 1964 is also present. As well as this there is a maker's label which is the classic gold on black type used by P. Frankenstein & Sons during this period. As well as this there are numerous Frankenstein 'P.F. & S.' stamps including test date stamps. The original owner has also marked his name to the label which reads 'F/L Letton'.

The jerkin is in good condition with only very limited signs of wear and age. It displays well with no flaws or damage but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original and hard to find piece of jet-age flying clothing which is in excellent condition.
