About this item
An original British Army Officers green coloured poplin cotton shirt made by 'Cotella' during the 1950s.
This shirt is typical of those made in the 1950s for officers in the British Army. It is made from a vibrant green coloured poplin cotton and features a neckband collar which would be worn with a matching detachable collar. A plain barrel cuff which is intended to be worn with cufflinks finishes the sleeve and the shirt features a full button front. This style started to gain popularity during the Second World War, eventually replacing the earlier style of half fronted shirts in the post-war period.
The original label is still present inside the shirt and is bright and legible. It bears the maker's name of 'Cotella Ltd' along with the 'Vantella' cotton brand name and the words 'English Made Shirt'. The size of 16 is stamped to the inside of the neckband.
The shirt is a medium size which will suit around a 40" - 42" chest, depending on desired fit. It is important to remember that they are designed to be worn loose across the chest so as to allow movement etc. When laid flat it measures -
Chest - 24"
Inside arm - 23"
Outside arm - 25 1/2"
Shoulders - 18"
Length at back - 37"
Neck - 16"
The shirt is in good condition with limited signs of wear and use. Overall it displays very well and it is totally wearable but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
A good original mid century shirt made from a lovely poplin cotton!
