    About this item

For sale is an WW2 Interest The Thousand Plan By Ralph Barker, this is an original

1st Edition that was published in 1965.    This is in good condition, with the original Dust jacket.    About this book;   “THE great thousand-bomber raid on Cologne of May 30-31, 1942, ranks with El Alamein and Stalingrad as a major turning point in the Second World War- such is the thesis of a book which brings much new material to the telling of a story of gripping excitement. At the time of the raid's conception Bomber Command's fortunes were at their lowest: less than one bomb in ten was falling within five miles of major targets and nearly five per cent of aircraft were lost on most major operations. Both Admiralty and War Office were clamour- ing for the transfer of the bombers to a tactical, supporting role. But Arthur Harris, the Com- mand's new leader, believed passionately that the war could be won by strategic bombing of Germany. The Thousand Plan was devised to vindicate this view. Every resource of men and material was strained to the utmost to build up a force which would destroy a major industrial city at one stroke. Although the raid may have failed in its material aim, the author believes it achieved the political vindication Harris sought, and thus made possible the strategic bombing offensive without which, he argues, there would probably have been no victory, certainly not in the west and certainly not in 1945. Controversial as it is, this is fundamentally a book about people and their magnificent response to a great challenge. The preparation and execution of the raid are described in vivid human detail, brought to life in scores of character studies and countless incidents, so that the reader lives through these dramatic events with the men themselves.”   This will be sent via Royal Mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within 2 working days.
