About this item

For sale is WW2 Interest Tiger Squadron By Wing Commander Ira (Taffy) Jones, 1st Edition, with original dust cover & Sleeve. In addition Is a newspaper clipping from the book release.

“This is the glorious story of one of the greatest fighter squadrons of all time, told by its oldest member, the famous air ace, Wing Commander Ira (Taffy) Jones. It is, however, much more than the history of a single squadron, for in setting down his narrative the author tells what is virtually the whole thrilling story of air fighting from the days of the old R.F.C. in France right up to and after the Battle of Britain. As such, it will be read with pride and pleasure by every man who ever served in the flying forces of Britain in either- or both-_-world wars. No man could be better qualified to write this epic story than Wing Commander Jones for he is perhaps the only living airman who flew fighter aircraft in the two great wars. He himself accounted for 40 enemy planes in com-bat, and it was "Taffy" Jones who trained so many of the FEW.   The story of "Tiger' Squadron will rank as one of the great war books because it is infused throughout with that curious blend of humility and indomitable courage which has always been the splendour and the symbol of Britain's air fighters. Here, in the simple, unadorned language of the typical flying-man, is the answer to the pompous boasts of Kessel-ring and other chroniclers of the "master-race" who have sought to whitewash Germany's resounding defeats in her two attempts at world domination. The author makes no attempt to deify the many gallant figures who pass across the pages of this book, or to magnify their achievements. The facts speak for themselves. It is a stirring record that cannot fail to bring a tingle of pride to every true Briton who reads it.”   This newspaper clipping states;    “GROUP CAPTAIN IRA JONES Group Captain James Ira Jones, D.S.O., M.C., D.F.C., M.M., who won an enviable reputation as a fighter pilot of great dash and distinction in the First World War, died on Monday in a Swansea hospital. He was credited with the destruction of 28 enemy aircraft, three balloons, and with the sending down of 10 aircraft out of control. He was said to have escaped from 28 crashes. Jones was born in 1896, educated at Car- marthen Grammar School, and straight into the Welch Regiment when war went broke out in 1914. A year later he trans- ferred to the Royal Flying Corps. His autobiography, An Air Fighter's Scrap- book, recreates with considerable success the grim but roaring days. and nights of the first fighter pilots. Emotional, highly strung the offensive spirit burned fiercely within him but it was matched by a deadly skill that enabled him to fight another day and yet another He was many times decorated for bravery. He served in the R.A.F. until 1936, when he retired, but he offered him- self for duty in the Second World War, in which he commanded an operational train- ing unit. But his heart was in flying and he could with difficulty be kept on the ground. On one occasion when commanding an R.A.F. station in Wales a Junkers 88 was reported in the area. Jones took off in an aircraft armed with only a Very pistol, and chased it firing his pistol. The bomber made off. In addition to his autobiography he wrote a biography of the great fighter pilot Edward ("Mick ") Mannock, with whom he had fought.”   This will be sent via Royal Mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.
