About this item

WW2 USAAF 9TH AF P-38 Pilot Lt H. R Ogger 430th sqdn, 474th FG - DFC medal and logbook grouping.

A lovely original DFC grouping to USAAF pilot Lieutenant Harold R Ogger of the 430th squadron of the 474th Fighter Group. Flying P-38 Lightnings over Europe on ground attack and strafing missions.

The grouping consists of the following medals: DFC medal in case with medal ribbon, Air Medal in case with ribbon, Purple Heart in case with ribbon, and finally a boxed Croix de Guerre with oak leaf. Also included in the grouping is one of Oggers identification cards, Jacket patches, 9th AF and USAAF patches. The jacket patch is superb, most likely an English-made patch, depicting a helmeted dog dropping bombs from his yellow P-38!  A superb patch. Ogger's original pilot's wings, marked sterling to the reverse. A diary from 1942, an original history of the back door gang, which mentions Ogger during an engagement with Luftwaffe fighters while flying over the Remagen bridge.

The group comes with Oggers original logbook as well, which we have to say is superb, so please do study the photos of the logbook. There are around 40 flights recorded from late 1944 into 1945, flying over targets, with entries for Napalm bombing, engagements with 109s and Fw190s. Ogger claims one 109 was damaged, and he suffered the aforementioned mid-air collision with an Fw190 over the Remagen Bridge, which I believe he was injured in and awarded his Purple Heart for. A superb grouping, worthy of further research and display.

Overall, a fantastic original medal and logbook grouping to a P-38 pilot, ideal for any USAAF museum, display, or collection.
