About this item
Original vintage pair of heavy-duty Scottish mountain / climbing boots, maker stamped internally and dated 1962.
The internal stamp appears to read:
J. McGreath
Maybole
1962
Size 10
Maybole, Ayrshire, was historically well known for boot and shoe manufacture, particularly rugged footwear intended for hard outdoor use.
The boots are made from heavy brown pebbled leather with substantial black rubber toe protection and heavy-duty soles.
Of particular interest are the original TRICOUNI BREV. SUISSE climbing cleats fitted around the soles. These Swiss-pattern Tricouni fittings were designed to provide extra grip on rock, scree, wet ground and mountain terrain, and are strongly associated with traditional mountaineering footwear.
The boots have clearly seen use and show age-related wear, scuffs, marks and surface deterioration consistent with their age and intended purpose. The soles and cleats show wear but remain very distinctive and substantially complete.
No definite British military issue markings have been identified, so I am not describing these as Army issue. They are, however, very much of the type associated with military, expedition and serious mountaineering use during the period.
