About this item
A scarce original early Second World War British Army No. 18 Wireless Set which is in good condition and features the rare black coloured face panels.
This man pack transmitter-receiver set was introduced into service during 1940 for short range communication in forward areas between Battalion HQ and Company HQ. It was designed to be portable and could be worn on a soldier's back using a harness and belt system and they saw widespread issue throughout the British Army for the duration of WW2.
This example is very original and complete. Whilst many offered onto the market today have missing or replacement reproduction parts, this example has survived in excellent original condition. The metal case that houses the transmitter and receiver is in excellent condition and retains the vast majority of its khaki green No.3 coloured paint finish which would suggest that it is of early-war manufacture. The original metal data plate which bears the title 'Wireless Set No. 18 MK' is still present to the top of the case and it also bears its serial number.
Of particular note is the original canvas cover which is in good condition. These are often missing or reproduction replacements but this example clearly retains its original cover. All of the straps are also original as is the waistbelt which bears the maker's initials of 'MECo' which denotes the maker as Mills Equipment Company, below which is date of 1943. The straps also bear their original markings.
Inside the case both parts of the radio are still present. The face plates are painted black which was only seen on early production models in 1940. One of the dials is marked with the date of 1942 and may be a period in service replacement.
The radio also comes complete with a set of sectional rods which are fitted to each side of the set.
The set is in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. There are some signs of wear and age and it has not been cleaned, instead being present in 'as found' condition.
This is a very rare early example which would suit someone interested in the early war period including the BEF and the Dieppe raid.
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
