About this item

An unusual and scarce RAF Type G1 Prismatic Gun Sight, representing an early generation of British aircraft gunsight technology developed before the widespread adoption of reflector sights during the Second World War.

The Type G1 employed a compact internal prismatic optical system and was associated with the development of British fighter armament during the late 1930s. The design saw relatively limited use as a primary pilot's sight before more practical reflector sights became standard.

Examples of the Type G1 system are associated with early RAF fighter applications including the Gloster Gladiator, with prismatic sight technology also forming part of subsequent British turret and experimental gunsight development.

This example is particularly interesting as it carries clear original markings:

PRISMATIC
TYPE G1

together with the Air Ministry A.M. Crown and the wartime reference 1757/44, indicating a 1944 issue/contract reference for an optical design originating before the war.

The sight retains its substantial circular mounting assembly, optical components and fine adjustment mechanisms. Original black finish remains throughout with genuine service wear, scratches and small areas of paint loss.

A fascinating and increasingly difficult-to-find piece of RAF armament history illustrating the transition from the early mechanical/prismatic sights of the 1930s to the reflector and gyroscopic sights that dominated WWII fighter aircraft.

Period: Pre-war design / WWII service
Marking: 1757/44
Manufacturer/ownership: British Air Ministry
Type: G1 Prismatic Gun Sight
Condition: Original service-used condition as photographed.
