    About this item

For sale is a Post WW2 British Royal Navy, Naval Ratings Handbook 1965. This is in mostly good condition, it’s been named by the previous owner, also there’s a slight tare in the spine which can be seen in the photos for more details.

The preface states:   This book has been written for the benefit of all men in all Branches of the Royal Navy and is issued to each rating when he joins. It contains brief descriptions of the organization and administration of the Service, its Branches and Reserves, the routine and organization of a ship, and other matters which all ratings should know. Many of the subjects included are set forth in general and elementary terms only, and in order to obtain a thorough knowledge of any particular subject the relevant books and publications must be consulted. Some of the more important of these are quoted at the beginning of the chapters concerned.   All ratings should be sailors, no matter to which Branch they belong, and no warship has room for passengers who are indifferent to what is going on around them. A sailor should not only know his own job, but he should understand what is going on all about him. This book is designed to give a rating sufficient information to enable him to: be safe at sea,   lend a hand in an emergency,   take an intelligent interest, and play his full part, in all the activities of a ship's daily life, understand how life in the Service is organized.   Just as the driver of a motor vehicle must develop road sense and be continuously alert, so must a sailor develop a sea sense, conduct himself in a seamanlike manner and be always ready to act at any time to avoid injury to his ship, his messmates or himself.   Read and study this book so that you may know better how to live in a warship and will therefore be prepared to meet the many calls that will be made upon you. In doing so you will improve your general knowledge of the Service to which you belong-and you will become a more useful shipmate   This will be sent via Royal Mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.
