FOOTNOTEJohn Miller, a packer from Ardwick, Manchester, attested into the Highland Light Infantry on 14 January 1897 and served during the occupation of Crete and in South Africa during the Boer War. Transferring to the Army Reserve on 22 October 1904, he was discharged on 13 January 1909. Whilst working as a bookmaker’s clerk in Derby, he attested into the Derbyshire Yeomanry on 14 June 1915 for service during the Great War and served in the Egyptian theatre from 17 December 1915. He saw later service in Salonika from 20 January 1916 and was discharged on 26 March 1919.
