    About this item

An original 1941 dated example of the British Army Bergen Rucksack in good condition.

These backpacks came into issue with the British Army in 1941 making this a very early example. They saw use with the Commandos as well as the SAS amongst others. This example is the tan colour used up until the green version superseded it in 1944 and saw use throughout the entire war.

This example features the standard black painted metal frame which is attached to the canvas body of the bag with leather tabs which all appear to be intact. Webbing shoulder straps are also present and have had extra padded sections added which could be removed if so desired. The bag retains its two small gauge blanket straps to the underneath which are often missing as well as the two fitted between each side pocket and the front pocket. The straps which run around the circumference of the bag are also present which is good as these were often cut off.

The inside of the internal flap features a pocket which fastens with a brass 'Lightning' branded zipper. There is also a zip inside the front pocket which features a nickel plated puller and has the brand name of 'Tefas' marked onto it. Inside the bag the maker's initials of 'C.C.L' are present as is the 1941 date.

The overall condition of the bag is good and it displays well. It has seen some use in its life and is not in perfect condition but is however a good original war dated example. There are some signs of oxidation etc to the brass parts but these could be cleaned if so desired. One of the straps underneath the bag is missing its brass end but still functions (picture 8).

Overall a very nice early war Bergen in good, usable condition and with a nice clear date.
