About this item
A very pleasing 1854 pattern Scots Guards Officers Sword.
The sword of John William Ainslie Drummond, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards.
Major Drummond served in the Soudan in 1885, being present in the engagements in the Hasheen and the Temai, for which he was awarded a Mention in Despatches, a Brevet of Major, the Queens Medal with clasp, and the Khedives Star. He was still serving in 1887, as the Regimental Adjutant.
This sword can be accurately dated by the proof number on the spine to February 1876. A digital copy of the original proof book entry for this sword will be made available to the new owner.
The gothic 1854 pattern Guards Officers hilt of polished steel, bearing the regimental badge of the Scots Guards. The stepped pommel and smooth backstrap with chequered thumb rest in good clean condition. Shagreen grip is largely complete, around 80%. The silver twistwire binding remains securely in place.
The 32 inch blade with Wilkinson's details to both ricassos. The blade is beautifully etched with regimental battle honours. Crowned VR cypher, and the Scots Guards regimental badge. The blade is generally bright, and retains a reasonable amount of its original polish. Some minor staining, signs of service sharpening, and the point has been reprofiled.
Housed in its original polished steel dress scabbard with twin hanging rings.
A very good, campaign carried example which is worthy of further research, having never previously been in a collection.
Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched. Please send this at the time of ordering, to prevent unnecessary delay in your order being dispatched.
