Wilkinson ERI 1897 Pattern infantry

An interesting Edwardian 1897 Pattern Infantry officers sword.

This example was originally produced by Wilkinson Sword as part of a contract for the Indian Government. It carries no proof ledger number to the spine, and the hilt and blade carry the ERI crowned cypher. As the blade is decorated, these swords were likely produced for use by Viceroy Commissioned Officers.

At some point during its life the blade has had an officers name etched onto the blade in an oval panel. This reads "M.F. ORCHARD 6TH N STAFFORDSHIRE REGT" The 6th was a pre war territorial unit which saw action during WW1. I believe Maurice Frank Orchard served with the Devonshire Regiment, and the Machine Gun Corps. He is also shown as still serving with the North Staffs as a Major in 1940, retiring in 1945. 

What is interesting is that at some point the hilt has been silver plated. Whether this was done originally, or by the Major Orchard when he acquired it, I do not know. An interesting sword, worthy of further research.

Regulation steel guard which has been silver plated. Crowned ERI cypher, with chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is complete, and retaining the twistwire binding. Some copper "bleed" now visible through the plating. Unit marks to the interior of the guard.

The Wilkinson produced single fullered blade with a length of 32.5 inches. Wilkinson proof slug with crown denoting a contract sword. Etched with modest floral decoration and crowned ERI cypher. Generally bright, with some areas of staining. 

Housed in a leather field service scabbard. Good overall condition is good, it would benefit from a clean, feed and polish.

An interesting sword, worthy of further research.
