About this item
This headline corresponds to a very specific naval action:
The Royal Navy intercepted five Italian coal ships in the English Channel on 10 March 1940.
On 10 March 1940, five Italian merchant ships loaded with German coal attempted to pass through the English Channel on their way to Italy. Italy was still officially neutral, but it was openly sympathetic to Germany, and Britain was determined to choke off anything that strengthened the Axis.
Royal Navy destroyers and patrol vessels intercepted the ships in the Channel and ordered them into British ports for contraband inspection. This was legal under international law, but it caused a diplomatic storm.
Italy immediately protested, claiming Britain had violated its neutrality. Britain replied that the ships were carrying enemy cargo, and therefore subject to seizure under the rules of blockade.
