About this item

For sale is a WW2 Air Raid Precautions Certificate Of Training For Marks & Spencer’s Ltd located at 311 Walworth Road, SE17 Southwark and issued to a Miss M Wright on the 27th of March 1940.

Marks & Spencer on Walworth Road served locals since 1913 and unfortunately closed down some time in 2024. During 1941 Walworth road was bombed badly during the blitz, we believe the marks and Spencer’s building was left without to much damage. Attached is a scan of a Black and white photograph showing extensive bomb damage to buildings on the west side of the Walworth Road. From No 40 to Draper Street. The photograph was taken in 1941. However this would suggest that Miss M Wright would have used her first aid skills during this time.

This certificate states;

“Metropolitan Borough of Southwark

This is to certify that Miss M. Wright of Messrs. Marks & Spencer Ltd., 311 Walworth Rd. S.E. 17, has attended a course of training held under the auspices of the Southwark Borough Council and has acquired knowledge of Air Raid Precautions in Anti-Gas.

Dated this 27th day of March 1940.

C. K. & Co., Ltd. 13685 1939.”
