About this item
A scarce original Fabrique Nationale (FN) extended 10-round magazine for the Browning Model 1903 Grand Modèle / Modèle de Guerre pistol, chambered for the 9mm Browning Long (9×20mm SR) cartridge.
The standard FN Model 1903 was fitted with a seven-round magazine; however, FN also produced a special version of the pistol designed for use with a detachable wooden shoulder stock. This arrangement required a distinctive extended 10-round magazine, considerably longer than the standard magazine and now a difficult original accessory to find.
This example is of early all-steel construction with alternating circular witness holes and retains its steel follower and extended base arrangement.
Clearly stamped to the body with the early intertwined FN factory monogram over “9 m/m”.
Of particular interest, the base/follower area is stamped:
4
10833
FN Model 1903 pistols were unusual in having their component parts numbered, including the magazine. The number 10833 is therefore believed to be the original serial/assembly number applied to this magazine, although the corresponding pistol is not present.
The FN Browning Model 1903 was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century as a substantial military and police automatic pistol. It was variously marketed as the Grand Modèle, Modèle de Guerre and Model 1903, and was adopted or purchased by several military and government users.
The special shoulder-stock configuration is particularly collectable. The extended magazine was an integral part of this arrangement, the stock fitting around the lower grip/magazine area and necessitating the longer 10-round magazine.
