About this item
The first I have personally owned, this 1939 B Type Helmet by Frank Bryan has been stores altered for use by the Navy.
The receiver carriers are the early hard Bakelite version, in this case incorporating the fittings to accept Gosport Tubes. In place are a pair of very good Type C 7063 receivers complete with cord. Interestingly, the microphone spur has been turned back and secured in place with a whip binding, the microphone terminal connectors wrapped in a cloth tape. This configuration strongly suggests an open cockpit environment with a need to listen to radio transmissions but perhaps only to communicate with other crew members through the Gosport system. There is no connector plug on the cord.
Inside the earpieces are the grey rubber AM marked sponges. Both zips are in very good working condition.
Inside the Helmet, the ear defenders appear to have been altered to those commonly associated with Navy Helmets and a pair of cheek protectors seem always to have been in place. The chamois lining is very good and without damage, the name T. Melling, clear the Frank Bryan label for this size 2 Helmet present.
Overall condition is very good, the leather soft and free from damage, all stitching firm, all straps and press fasteners in place
A lovely and I believe rather scarce example.
