About this item

An original first pattern C Type Flying Helmet dating from the early part of the Second World War.

This pattern of helmet was introduced during 1941 and replaced the B-type flying helmet. It is synonymous with the fighter pilots of the Second World War and also saw use with Bomber Command, the USAAF and many others during the conflict.

This particular example features the extra goggle straps towards the front of the helmet which are one of the notable features of these early helmets. Like the B-type flying helmet, this helmet was designed to be fitted with an external wiring loom and also features a 'Bennetts' buckle which fastens the chin strap. The cushion strap which also fastens under the chin still bears crisp markings including the Air Ministry AM and crown marking and the RAF Stores reference number of 22c/452 which denotes the size of 4. Inside the helmet the original stamp is still present and whilst worn, the size of 4 can still be read.

The helmet is in excellent condition and displays very well. The leather is supple and the chrome finish to the exterior is in very good condition. There are only limited signs of age and wear and overall the helmet displays very well. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A fine example which would be hard to improve on. Not only that but it is the largest size produced which are always hard to find!

This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
