Rare 1945 Dated RAF Cold Weather Leather Flying Mask

A rare original Royal Air Force leather face mask which was made in 1945 and is in excellent condition. 

This pattern of mask was designed to be worn over the C Type Flying Helmet and G Type Oxygen mask to protect the wearer from the elements. It is made in a special shape which is cut so it fits well over the G Type mask and there is a flap at the front which is secured by two brass 'Newey' branded press studs. This can be opened to allow access to the Type 48 microphone fitted to the front of the oxygen mask and means that the On/Off switch can be operated. There is an elastic head strap to the rear which again is specifically designed to fit over the C Type Flying Helmet. It splits into two parts to allow the strap to be fitted over the rubber receiver cups on a C, D or E pattern flying helmet which again shows that it was specially designed to be worn with the issue equipment.  

The maker's markings are still present to the bottom of the mask and are crisp and clear. The maker's name of 'G. S. (W) Ltd' is present below which is the 1945 date. The War Department broad arrow marking is also present. 

The mask is in good condition and does not appear to have been issued or worn previously. The chromed leather finish is very good with only limited signs of age and the chamois backing is also very clean. The elastic head strap is also good and retains plenty of elasticity. Overall it displays very well but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
