WW1 RFC COWL FLYING HELMET

WW1 period RFC cowl-type flying helmet. Really nice cowl-type flying helmet, as worn by early aviators, pilots, and aircrew during WW1 and into the 20s.

A really rather nice helmet, the RFC cowl-type flying helmet of WW1 was introduced in 1916. They were a popular type of helmet as they provided the wearer with a large amount of coverage and protection from the elements. They were, however, widely modified, but luckily, this example has survived in its original condition.

The helmet itself is in nice used condition, the leather still soft and supple, retaining a good light brown chromed finish. No damaged rips or tears to report to the exterior. The helmet is lined with chamois, but unfortunately, the middle fleece section is now missing, further lined with chamois now. Sadly, no other identifying marks or maker details are visible. On the exterior, the brown ear flaps and wind deflectors are in good condition; they are secured shut with press studs on either side. Several of these press studs have come adrift, but both flaps can be closed. The opening of the helmet can be adjusted with a strap and buckle, both of which are again in good condition with no issues to report. Overall, a lovely helmet that would grace any WW1 RFC or flying collection, museum, or display.
