About this item
WW2 RAF 1ST PATTERN C-TYPE FLYING HELMET. A very nice example of the 1st pattern C-type flying helmet as used by RAF, USAAF, and Commonwealth aircrew.
A good example of the 1st pattern C-type flying helmet; the leather of the helmet is dark brown in colour. It is still soft and supple but a tad dry. It would most likely come up nicely with some leather dressing. To the top of the helmet is an original painted yellow circle; we assume this is an identification mark, often applied to help downed airmen be visible from the sea. The helmet has all 4 straps, press studs, and a buckle to the rear, all in good condition. To the front, we find all 6 press studs in place for attaching an oxygen mask, as well as an oxygen mask clip. The chinstrap and buckle are again in good condition. Finally, on the exterior, both rubber earcups are in place and in good condition; these are still soft and pliable. They will accept RAF earphones or USAAF-pattern earphones with ease.
Inside, the chamois lining shows signs of minimal use and is undamaged. The ear donuts are in good condition also, again showing little wear or use. Stamped on the outside with stores reference number 22C/451. This would indicate it's a size 3, and is approximately a size 55-56 UK hat size. Overall, a very nice used 1st pattern C-type flying helmet in a good size, ideal for an RAF museum, collection, or display.
