About this item
WW2 RAF 1st PATTERN D-TYPE FLYING HELMET. A nice example of the D-type flying helmet, worn in hotter, sunnier climates by RAF, USAAF, and Commonwealth airmen.
A very nice example of the popular 1st pattern D-type flying helmet. The helmet is in very good condition, with no areas of damage, rips, or tears we can see to the exterior material. Still retains very good color, and there are a few areas of staining to the helmet, but nothing serious. The helmet with all goggles straps and buckle still in place, both in excellent condition. The helmet has press studs that accommodate nearly all types of wartime oxygen masks used by the RAF during WW2. Both rubber earphone holders are still soft and pliable and should take a set of earphones easily.
The neck cover is in good condition, but sometimes these were removed. The chinstrap is still present, the Bennett buckle is also in excellent condition. The helmet does not appear to be marked anywhere, but any ink stamps may have faded with time.
Moving inside again, we see the white silk material lining is in good used condition, without damage, rips, or tears that we can see. Both ear donuts are again in excellent condition. Both pieces of brown felt on the brow and chin area are also in good condition, often found with moth damage. The helmet is not marked, but we estimate the size to be approximately a size 57-58 UK hat size, fitting our display head here snugly.
Overall, a very nice example of the popular and desirable D-type flying helmet. It really would display a lot better with an oxygen mask and goggles. From the exterior, it really isn't too bad, a good entry-level D-type helmet, Ideal for any RAF collection, museum, or display.
