About this item
WW2 RAF B-type flying helmet - J.COMPTON SONS & WEBB LTD - Sz2 - 1940. A good, well-worn example of the iconic B-type helmet. As used and worn by aircrew and pilots during the early years of WW2 and during The Battle of Britain.
This helmet is well-used but still in good condition overall. The exterior leather is in well-worn condition, but all things considered, not too bad. There is some small loss to the brown finish, but the leather is still soft and supple. The leather with no holes, tears, or damage we can see. The chinstrap and buckle again without issues, as is the rear adjustment strap.
One zip on the zip ears is unfortunately stuck, and needs freeing up, whilst the other still runs nic and freely. Inside the zip ears, we find both original earphone holders, both in good condition. Finally, the zip ears are fitted out with original RCAF-marked foam ear pads.
Moving inside, the chamois is soiled from use but is in pretty good condition. Some wear to the chamois ear donuts as photographed. The helmet is with its original label, manufactured by "J.COMPTON SONS & WEBB LTD. LONDON", also marked with size 2, and dated 1940. We estimate the size to be around a size 56 UK hat size.
Overall, a well-used, but intact and very displayable B-type helmet. It would display very nicely with a pair of goggles and an oxygen mask! A lovely piece for any WW2 RAF collection, museum, or display!
