About this item

WW2 RAF B-type flying helmet - modified. A good example of the iconic B-type helmet. As used and worn by aircrew and pilots during the early years of WW2. This example also having the addition of extra press studs and an oxygen mask hook, for use with E, E*, and G-type oxygen masks.

This example is in pretty good condition, it has a few minor issues, but still in very good displayable condition. The exterior leather is in very good condition all things considered. There is minimal loss to the brown finish. With no holes, tears, or damage to the leather, we can see.  The chinstrap and buckle again without issues as is the rear adjustment strap.

There is some stitching coming undone on one of the zips, we have photographed this and it is not a major issue. On the other zip ear, a small section of stitching is coming undone on the bottom edge of the zip ear. A couple of small repairs could benefit the zip ears. But they are not bad at all. Both zips are in good functioning condition though, both running up and down freely. Inside the zip ears, we find both original rubber earphone holders, both in good condition. Finally, the zip ears fitted out with original A.M. marked foam ear pads.

Moving inside, the chamois is soiled from use but is in pretty good condition. The helmet is marked with serial number 142194 and named "Wellman". We haven't researched the name but possible scope for further research there. The helmet is still with the original manufacturer's label. Manufactured by Frank Bryan Ltd of London, also marked with an A.M crown and stores reference number 22C/65. Size marked as a 3, and also dated on the bottom 1939. We estimate the size to be around a size 56 UK hat size. The helmet is also fitted with a pair of chamois face defenders, both in excellent condition and A.M. marked.

Overall a very displayable B-type helmet with a rare modification. It would still display very nicely with a pair of goggles and an oxygen mask! A lovely piece for any WW2 RAF collection, museum, or display!
